The York Fire, which originated at the Mojave National Preserve in California, crossed into Nevada on Sunday, July 30, according to a local government announcement. By Sunday, the York Fire had burned 70,000 acres, and was zero percent contained, according to the Mojave National Preserve. Firefighters have faced challenging conditions, with crews in some areas having reported seeing flames up to 20 feet high, according to the Bureau of Land Management. Whirlwinds have been observed on the north side of the fire, which have the potential to spread embers over long distances and start new fires ahead of the main front, the Mojave National Preserve said.
