Date – Monday, July 31st, 2023 – St. Ignatius of Loyola

1. St. Ignatius of Loyola was born in 1491 at the Castle of Loyola in northern Spain.

2. At the age of 15, he entered into service at the court of King Ferdinand V and chose a military career.

3. During the siege of Pamplona, he suffered a grave injury from a cannonball striking his right leg.

4. While convalescing, he read the lives of the Saints and came to understand the Church's call to defend God's interests.

5. At Montserrat, he laid aside his sword at the altar of the Holy Virgin, marking a turning point in his life.

6. St. Ignatius founded the Society of Jesus, with the goal of combating Protestantism, Jansenism, and neo-paganism prevalent at the time.

7. He wrote the book "Spiritual Exercises" to form his disciples and followers in their spiritual journey.

8. The motto of his Society became "Ad majorem Dei gloriam" - All for the greater glory of God [A.M.D.G.].

9. St. Ignatius passed away on July 31, 1556, with the name of Jesus on his lips.

10. His spiritual conversion and founding of the Society of Jesus restored the sacred knighthood and established a new order of priest-warriors dedicated to the Church's combat through preaching, teaching, and converting people.

St. Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us!
