GUADALUPE ISLAND, MEXICO — A shark expert posted a video to his Facebook page that shows him exiting his shark cage to give an enormous great white shark a high five. Mauricio Hoyos Padilla, who works at environmental conservation organization Pelagios Kakunja, shared the video on Tuesday. The video has since been removed from his page, but it has received more than 3 million views. The Discovery Channel featured the great white shark during its 2014 Shark Week program. In the Discovery Channel’s video, the team refers to the female shark as Deep Blue. The shark is at least 20 feet long, which is about the limit for a full-grown female, according to National Geographic. Deep Blue was pregnant at the time of filming, the Discovery team said, and “likely to be hungry.” Deep Blue has scars on her left side, which may have come from fights with other sharks or mating, according to Discovery. Discovery found Deep Blue off the coast of Guadalupe Island in Mexico. Padilla, who hails from Mexico City and lives in La Paz, said it was the first time he had seen the shark. The team estimated the shark to be about 50 years old.
