Final Fantasy Tactics (ファイナルファンタジータクティクス Fainaru Fantajī Takutikusu?) is a tactical role-playing video game developed and published by SquareSoft for the PlayStation. It was the first game in the Final Fantasy Tactics subseries, being released in Japan in June 1997 and in the United States in January 1998. The game combines thematic elements of the Final Fantasy series with a game engine and battle system different from what had previously been previously done in the franchise. Tactics uses a rotating, isometric, three-dimensional playing field.

The game takes place in a fictional medieval kingdom called Ivalice created by director and screenwriter Yasumi Matsuno. The story follows Ramza Beoulve, a cadet who finds himself caught in the middle of a complicated military conflict known as The Lion War, where two rival noble factions are vying for the throne of the kingdom. Ramza and his allies end up discovering a sinister plan behind the war.

A spin-off title called Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was released in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance, with its sequel Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift being released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS. Several other games since then have used Ivalice as their main setting, such as Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII. Overall, Tactics was well received by critics and has become very popular with fans of the series.
