The southpaw known as ‘Boom Boom’ has had ten amateur MMA fights and made her bare-knuckle boxing debut at the June 25th cross-promotional event.

Cannon felt good about the W and felt she needed it here as a debutant.

Cannon’s assessment was that her lack of timidity and desire to throw hands lead to the win over her more sweet science-focused opponent. Cannon anticipated more of a five-round fight, but was happy with the stoppage.

Kappen was also making her bare-knuckle debut and entered the Trigon with a big boxing background. Considering Cannon’s MMA background, and if any adapting was needed to fight someone with more boxing-specific experience, Cannon said,

“I mean, honestly, I noticed that I came out stronger at the beginning, where she was kind of feeling it out - being a little bit more professional about it. As the rounds went on, she had gotten stronger and her hits had gotten harder. So for me, it was the opposite.”

“I think that honestly, my message to her is just to keep progressing forward, because as the rounds went on, she was getting a lot tougher. So yeah, that was I think the biggest difference.”

Cannon had planted Kappen to the canvas and smelled the proverbial blood in the water as the finish emerged not long thereafter.

Cannon utilized many angles and staying in tight as she readied for bare-knuckle - not the usual MMA camp, with more jiu-jitsu and other martial arts considerations.

She felt proud to represent the US and that team BYB bested BKB for the inaugural Police Gazette International Cup. Cannon anticipated nerves heading in, but honed it for her performance to be situationally aware.

Cannon has a four-fight contract and is looking forward to her sophomore effort in bare-knuckle boxing and in BYB Extreme’s Mighty Trigon specifically. She is hoping they continue to build the 115 lb division to increase her depth of competition.

Shelby Cannon feels bare knuckle is a lot safer than her former sport of MMA, and came to that conclusion after researching the empirical evidence around this new, yet old, combat sport.
