In 1926, Chiang Rai Airport was established, making it the first airport in the region and the second in Thailand.

As years went by, Chiang Rai Airport played a vital role during the Pacific War by facilitating the transportation of military equipment. It served as the base for the esteemed 417th Squadron of the Royal Thai Air Force. However, in 1992, a new airport was opened, and this Chiang Rai Airport was believed to have been abandoned.

The old airport didn't fade away completely. Today, the runway and surrounding area have been repurposed for recreational activities and events. It has become a beloved local park, where people gather to enjoy various leisurely pursuits.

Fast forward to 2018, and this Chiang Rai Airport resurfaced in the headlines once again. This time, it played a crucial role in supporting the Tham Luang cave rescue operation. The airport served as a helicopter landing base, assisting in the mission to save the trapped individuals in the treacherous cave system.
