These Bunnies Have Never Had A Bad Hare Day

A bunny breeded from California is the proud owner of the world’s furriest rabbits. Their fur can reach lengths of almost 15 inches in length! Betty Chu, a former professor of economics has been dedicated to breeding the fluffy bunnies for 34 years to produce prize-winning English angora rabbits.

The 70-year-old retired professor from San Jose State University was introduced to the breed via a friend and she fell in love with them immediately. Today, she and her husband share their home in San Jose, California with 50 English and French angora rabbits.

Betty, who is part of the Northern California Angora Guild, competes at up to 50 shows a year. The undisputed queen of the angora category has won countless best-in-show awards. But she made headlines when her best bunny Franchesca was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest fur in the world, measuring 14.37 inches.

The bunnies all have an extensive beauty regime to keep them in shape for the rabbit show circuit. Still, Betty says that there is a lot to get you there. "You need to have the right genetics; not all angora rabbits have the ability to grow and maintain a long coat,” says the dedicated breeder. "Next you need to take very good care. The owner needs to be very vigilant in keeping the rabbit well-maintained and in good condition.”

Francheska might be a pageant queen, but even they need to leave offspring at some point in their lives. And when her boyfriend couldn’t find Francesca's “hidden treasure” under her luscious coat, Betty had to give her a haircut. She uses the fur to make scarves and mitten, which she sells at shows.
