Nikolay Gogol (1809-1852). Extract from his short story about a quarrel between two good friends: 'How Ivan Ivanovich quarrelled with Ivan Nikiforovich' (1834), translated by Ronald Wilkes, published by Penguin Classics.
Also, the American translation: 'The Complete Tales of Nikolai Gogol', vol.2, Edited by Leonard J. Kent, original translation by Constance Garnett. Constance Garnett translated at the beginning of the 20thc a great number of Russian literature. However, most needed to be updated, as her translations were not altogether perfect, sometimes leaving out passages, etc. In any case, we owe her a debt of gratitude for all her work in making this wonderful literature available to English readers.
