Huge street brawl in Auckland, New Zealand
Do you know the men in this video?
Another night of senseless violence in Auckland’s party hot spots on Saturday night/Sunday morning has once again left Police frustrated and disappointed.
One man was left hospitalised after multiple fights in Karangahape Road, which took place over several inner city streets. Two men appear in court today charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with intent to injure as a result .
Police made fourteen arrests in restoring order in the location mainly for disorderly behaviour.
This video shows just some of the chaotic scenes that Police had to deal with in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Just after 2am, a large group of more than 15 can be seen lining the side of K Road and fighting. Law-abiding members of the public are forced to take evasive action as the fighting moves into the middle of an intersection, in the path of oncoming traffic.
One of the brawls ends up taking place on the bonnet of a car waiting at the lights.
Police are now trying to identify the people in the video and are not ruling out further charges, as investigations continue.
Half an hour after the fight on K Road, another fight broke out nearby in East Street, in which the man in hospital sustained his injuries.
“It’s hugely frustrating and disappointing to see violence like this in our city at night. This was violence fuelled by alcohol and people who can’t handle their drink ” said Inspector Mark Benefield.
“It only takes one punch and someone falls, knocks their head and dies. How many families would that affect? These brawlers are just one moment away from changing people’s lives forever.
Not only that, but spare a thought for the innocent people who are going about their business along K Road; the motorist waiting at the lights who finds the bonnet of their car being used as a boxing ring. It’s extremely frightening and law-abiding people shouldn’t have to deal with it” he says.
Police will continue to patrol city party hot spots as the warmer weather approaches, and will be taking a very low tolerance approach to similar behaviour.
“We fully expect more people to come into the city at night as the party season approaches and we will be coming down hard on those who do behave badly whilst under the influence” he says.
Police will be asking bar owners and managers to be extra vigilant with patrons in meeting their responsibilities under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 .
“Auckland is a fantastic city to enjoy at this time of the year but it’s unacceptable that this level of violence occurs when people want to come into the city to enjoy themselves.”
Inspector Benefield reminds people coming into the Central Business District that that the entire CBD has a 24 hour alcohol ban which Police will enforce with $250 fines or arrest.
Anyone with information about the people involved in the fight is asked to contact Auckland Police on 09 302 6557.
Information can also be given anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
