The Death of Joseph Stalin

2023 marks 70 years since the death of Soviet leader Joseph #Stalin, who remains controversial to this day. (His suspicious demise is still the great #JFK Conspiracy Theory in #Russia today.)

After his sudden passing in March 1953, Stalin's body was put on display at the Hall of Columns in the House of the Unions, remaining there for three days, while more than five million mourners came to pay their respects. (By contrast, about 250,000 Americans passed by the coffin of President John F. Kennedy after his assassination a decade later.)

The crowds were so tremendous that hundreds of people were trampled and crushed to death. His successor, Nikita #Khrushchev later provided an estimate that 109 people died in the crowd, although the real number of deaths may have been in the thousands.
