Chapter 9: Objections to Atheism

One of the primary reason people reject Atheism is that it simply offers its followers no advantage in the afterlife even if it were true. Even if the Atheism was true, Atheists would meet the same fate as everyone else, oblivion. Because Atheists’ consciousness would cease in oblivion, so they wouldn’t even be able to be aware to appreciate that they were right and Atheism were true. For this reason some of the major opponents to Atheism have always included people who desire a favorable afterlife to following this life. Atheism promises oblivion whereas the Bible promises a perfect eternal society living with an all-sufficient, generous, and loving God.

Revelation 4:2-4

At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. Revelation 21:1-4

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! Revelation 21:10-12

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. Revelation 21:18-21

Revelation 21:6-8

Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Revelation 22:1-2

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

When Atheists directly or indirectly tell people “this life is all there is and then after death there is oblivion”, people who have loved ones who are suffering or dying are definitely not going to have appreciative words to say about Atheism. For everyone who finds this life not to be adequate, Atheism simply has no appeal or motivation to recognize it even if it were true.

If a person has the choice of certain death or the chance to save their life, that person is going to take that chance. It isn’t necessarily stupidity to take that chance, or even selfishness (as long as it doesn’t harm other people); it is simply just not being suicidal. Unless a person thinks that Atheism is a tool to suppress religions that seem harmful or even just annoying, then there would be no advantage to identify with Atheism even if it were true. Why would they care about Atheism since it isn’t going to give them any advantage anyway? Identifying with Atheism is therefore merely tool to suppress religions that are viewed to be harmful or even just annoying. There really is no point for an Atheist trying to debate people whether Atheism is true, but rather it is more effective convince people that other religions are false, harmful or just annoying, and should not be tolerated. People are not deterred from Atheism based on objections to whether Atheism is true, but rather they are only deterred from Atheism if they find another that they believe is both true and beneficial. Therefore, people who identify as Atheists do not have a need to debunk objections to Atheism, but rather simply assert those objections are trivial if there is no viable alternative. The following are some common objections.

(1) You cannot prove that God does not exist. (2) Atheism cannot account for life after death. (3) Atheism is bleak, nihilistic, and depressing. (4) Atheism is boring and life would have no purpose. (5) Atheism is dehumanizing and amoral. (6) Atheists cannot rebel against something that doesn’t exist. (7) Atheism cannot account for the existence of our universe. (8) Evolutionary science is Atheism in disguise. (9) Scientists cannot create living cells from nonliving matter. (10) Complex animal life could not design itself. (11) Atheism cannot account for human intelligence and rationality. (12) Jesus was a Liar, a Lunatic, or is the Lord.

Atheism cannot offer anything for the afterlife even if it were true, so it is marketed as a way to remove religious obstacles that obstruct people from obtaining their desires in this life. Most Atheists will admit that it is a hapless religion if it were true, but they identify themselves as being an Atheists as a way to removes obstacles to getting what they desire in this life.
