If you are struggling to find caramel in a can in the store, Todd here will show you how to make your own homemade caramel at home. Make your own rich caramel at home with this recipe from Todd. Called dulce de leche in some countries this is a very simple method on how to make a lovely and gooey caramel that is fantastic as a sauce or topping, which will also save you some money!

Start off by filling a deep medium pot with water. Next, remove the label from an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk and carefully place the can inside the pot, ensuring there’s enough water to completely cover the can at all times, topping up water frequently throughout the cooking process. You can add several cans if the pot is spacious and bring it to simmer uncovered for three hours. However, the most important thing is to make sure the can is completely covered with water at all times during cooking, because if some part of the can gets exposed to the air, it may possibly explode.

Next, carefully remove the can from the boiling water and allow it to cool overnight for about six hours before opening and using as a caramel spread or dip. Alternately, combine 200g butter with 200g brown sugar in a medium saucepan. Stir over low heat until the butter and sugar become a smooth liquid. Add 395g condensed milk. Stir over low heat for 20 minutes or until mixture browns and thickens slightly. Mixture will be very hot. Completely cool before using.
