• Neh. 11:12-21 The names were mentioned of the sons and successor of Jeshua, or Joshua, the first high priest of the second temple; the principal men of the priesthood in his time were as follow, and who were the sons, or however the descendants of the priests in the time of his father mentioned before. These were Meraiah, Hananiah, Meshullam, Jehohanan, Jonathan, Joseph, Adna, Helkai, Zechariah, (the prophet of that name,) Meshullam, Zichri, Piltai, Shammua, Jehonathan, Mattenai, Uzzi, Kallai, Eber, Hashabiah, Nethaneel; in all twenty, whereas there are twenty two named, as in his father's days, there being no successors from two of them, namely, Hattush and Miamin. This may be the result of not taking responsibility to pass on the baton as the scriptures say in 2Ti 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Let's instruct our succeeding generation in the way of the Lord.

• Neh. 12:22-23 Here the following generations of Levites are mentioned, who live during the time of successive high priests. God also maintains the Levite service, even though it sometimes seems as if it is over. The priestly service also continues, despite foreign domination. There is no conceivable circumstance of which it should be said that God cannot be brought what is due to Him. Nothing can be done against God or the kingdom because God rules in the affairs of men., and the heart of everyone including kings and rulers are in his hands.

• Neh. 12:24-26 Of the Levites mentioned here, it is said as a special feature that they are there “in the days of Joiakim …, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and of Ezra the priest [and] scribe”. These Levites are contemporaries of these men, that is to say, they have to deal with the same spiritual atmosphere and face the special spirit that characterizes the time in which they live. These contemporaries hold on to God’s Word, while the characteristic of that time is that it is abandoned by the majority. They maintain, though in weakness, a testimony to the LORD Who brought them back to the place of His Name. Of the heads of the Levites it is specially mentioned that they “praise [and] give thanks, as prescribed by David the man of God”. They do not look at the wretched situation in which they find themselves, but at God’s commandment, and they keep it. Whatever our weakness may be, we too can keep what is from the beginning and carry out what is written.

Personal Supplication
Father, in the name of Jesus, in spite of what is happening around me, help me to regard what is written as superior to what is happening. Heb 10:7
7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me— To do Your will, O God.’ ”
