Statement by the President Truman Announcing the Use of the A-Bomb at Hiroshima

President Harry S. Truman informs the nation of the United States that an atomic weapon has been detonated in Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th 1945.

Speaking from a cabin aboard the USS Augusta, the President describes the destructive force of the new weapon and the secrecy regarding its creation. He describes how the use of the A-Bomb was an alternative to a land invasion to defeat the Empire of Japan in World War II.

A second A-Bomb was detonated over the Japanese city of Nagasaki on the 9th August 1945, which resulted in the Empire of Japan officially surrendering on the 15th August 1945.

President Harry S. Truman replaced Franklin D. Roosevelt who passed away on the 12th April 1945 to become the 33rd President Of The United States.

He was succeeded by Dwight D. Eisenhower who became the 34th President of the United States on the 20th January 1953.
