Who was the mother of poet Emily Dickinson, referred to as Emily Sr. by some scholars? Sharing the same name, Emily Norcross Dickinson (1804-1882) grew up in Massachusetts. Her home was afflicted by tuberculosis and her mother died only a few weeks after she was born. A new stepmother, Sarah Vaill from the Reverend Vaill family of Connecticut, soon joined the Norcross family. The Norcross House still stands in Monson, Massachusetts. Emily Norcross met Edward Dickinson when both were in their early 20s, in 1826 or 1828. A written correspondence was established and soon three children were born of their union: Austin (1829-1895), Emily (1830-1886) and Lavinia (1833-1899). Poet Emily wrote harshly about her mother to others throughout her 30s. What was the reason for such harsh treatment?
