How WOKE is Bird Box?

🙏🏼 HELP ME REACH 50 SUBSCRIBERS 🙏🏼

For our second episode of Sublemonal Messaging, we are doing a Netflix film critique of Bird Box, written and directed by Susanne Bier and released in 2018.

Bird Box is Netflix's 3rd most watched film, as of July 1st 2023 (measured by hours viewed within the first 28 days of release).

Bird Box is a post-apocalyptic horror thriller film, based on the 2014 novel by Josh Malerman. According to Wikipedia, the film follows the character Malorie Hayes, played by Sandra Bullock, as she tries to protect herself and two children from entities which cause people who look at them to kill themselves.

Today, we'll be looking at how Netflix's film uses subtle - as well as not-so-subtle - messages to comment on gender roles, race, and political affiliation.

SPOILER ALERT As this video examines nearly every scene of the movie from start to finish, you will likely encounter many spoilers.
