i have been using Duolingo for some Japanese and Spanish course. i paid the subscription and thought they would support the education and also improves (free) user experience. for two years, unfortunately, since the removal of the forum, things have fallen into a money grab and it doesn't even seem they care about any of us. in addition, vocabulary.com went this way too, worse, you must pay if you want the features it used to have.

there is no free lunch in the world, but clearly not in this sense.

1:46 - some Duolingo tape in late 2021s
6:56 - some experience of today's Duolingo
9:55 - "word banks only, take it or that's your problem"

18:12 - learning progress is nothing more than a monolith
19:13 - upfront assumption that everyone using Duo uses American grammar
