Mystery of Early Acorn Shedding Revealed

Red oaks take 3 years total to create an acorn. Along the way, any unfavorable weather event can derail the process. Late Frost, heavy rain during pollination, drought stress, defoliation can all contribute to the loss of an acorn crop. That is why there are often many years of low production between bumper crops. Everything has to be just right to get that.
You cannot rely on acorns to feed wildlife.
