The Volhynia massacres were part of an ethnic cleansing operation in the Polish province of Eastern Galicia and Volhynia, which is now in western Ukraine. The massacres began in March 1943 and lasted until the end of 1944. The Ukrainian nationalists, led by Stepan Bandera, attacked about 150 villages, murdering the minority Polish population. Entire villages were burned down and all their inhabitants killed.
