Russia has raised the maximum age for soldiers by up to ten years to assemble 100,000 men for a new battle in Ukraine, particularly targeting the region around Kupyansk. A recently approved law now allows reservists with the highest rank to be called back into service up to the age of 70, while men who have completed their compulsory service can re-enter the army up to age 55. Reports indicate that 47,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the war began in Ukraine in February 2022. Amidst decreasing birth rates, the Russian health minister criticised delaying childbirth for education and career. Allegations have also surfaced against Putin, accusing him of forcibly taking children from Ukraine to Russia. Outgoing UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace estimated up to 250,000 dead or injured Russian casualties in the ongoing conflict, with Ukraine claiming to have shot down Russian drones and cruise missiles targeting a Black Sea port.
