The Teal Pumpkin Project Keeps Kids With Allergies Safe

This year when you are out trick-or-treating you might notice something different on doorsteps. There is a teal takeover happening, but why are people painting their pumpkins teal? There is an important message behind it!

Launched as a national campaign by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) in 2014, the Teal Pumpkin Project™ raises awareness of food allergies and promotes inclusion of all trick-or-treaters throughout the Halloween season.

Kids love to go trick-or-treating, but it can cause a lot of anxiety for those with food allergies. Trick-or-treating can be nasty for kids with serious allergies who are unable to eat ingredients commonly found in popular candies, like milk, nuts, eggs, and soy. So, the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) group is hoping to raise awareness and at the same time make Halloween more exciting for these children.

The Teal Pumpkin Project is designed to highlight houses that are celebrating this holiday in an allergy-friendly way and offer "non-food treats" such as small toys, crayons and stickers. These households place a pumpkin painted teal on their porch or stoop, so parents of affected children will know where to go for safe Halloween goodies.

This concept has gained massive popularity on social media and now teal is the new orange for Halloween pumpkins! Did you join this movement?
