Wait... FASTING gives you MORE energy???

A friend of mine recently did a fast and could not believe how much energy he had. He asked me how this could be and the answer is actually quite simple! When we fast, our resting epinephrine and norepinephrine levels increase!

in 1990 a study was conducted by the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas that monitored the epinephrine and norepinephrine levels of 5 adults that underwent an 84 hour fast. (3 and 1/2 days!)As the fast went longer, the resting epinephrine levels increased, peaking at about 14% overall increase by the 72 hour mark.

So how does this apply to the sensation of increased energy while fasting? Well, the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine are commonly known as "adrenaline". These hormones are secreted in the adrenal medulla, and during moments of acute stress these hormones spike to cause an involuntary call to action. Think fight or flight! But at resting levels these hormones are still present, and so is the call to action! When you take action, even something as simple as picking up a cup, that is norepinephrine at work! So when we are fasted, having an increase in these hormones work to actually increase our energy output! If that wasn't enough, a higher epinephrine level will result in a faster resting heart rate, which means higher basal metabolic rate! Yay!

Fasting is an incredible health hack that unfortunately has been left behind in the modern world. But its been practiced by all religious groups around the world, whether it be Christianity, Islam, Judaism or even Eastern religions like Buddhism and Hinduism. For most of human history it has been a staple to fast! My goal is to help bring people back into the fold, regardless of your spiritual beliefs, fasting can be an excellent way to shed some pounds and also recalibrate your body to use it's hormones more effectively!
