Some animals have slow digestion system problem. Most herbivores faces this problem. Due to this problem, animals use COPROPHAGY mechanism (feces/dung-eating) from other species (ALLOCOPROPHAGY) or one’s own (AUTOCOPROPHAGY) to speed up the rate of digestion.

Elephants are among the herbivores who are having slow and poor digestion system due to their lifestyles. Normally, elephants complete their digestion after 14-18 hours, contrary to human being who complete digestion after only 2 hours. Therefore, in order for an elephant to speed up the rate of digestion, they uses AUTOCOPROPHAGY to speed up the rate of digestion (eat one’ or own dung those once deposited or taken directly from the anus). However, AUTOCOPROPHAGY is common to elephant calves as they normally eat adult dung to obtain useful bacteria as they are being born without it.
