The song “Nearer My God To Thee” is a retelling of Jacob’s dream which is an account from Genesis 28:10–19:
"When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it."

“Nearer My God To Thee” is very well known today in pop culture probably because it was the last song that the passengers on the Titanic sang as the ship went down. In (pretty much all the film adaptations about the ill fated voyage) the movie “Titanic” from 1997, the hymn can be heard right about the time the ship sinks. Since “Titanic” is one of the most popular movies of all time it probably cements the tune in people’s minds whether they even realize they know it or not.
