REPORT #1 | From small boats to big barges, the Portland migrant crisis

844

The small island of Portland in Dorset, with a population of 13.5k is set to host 506 so called asylum seekers for a minimum of 18 months, starting from this week. The government claim the use of barges is to save public funds, as they are currently spending over £6m per day on housing over 50k so called asylum seekers whilst their claims are processed.

Despite the government claiming they will stop the boats and the Illegal Immigration Bill being passed, migrants are still flooding into the country via small boats from France. Since 2018, nearly 100k migrants have made the journey in small boats that we know of. The record is 1295 in one day, 22nd August 2022. The most so far in one day this year was 686 on the 7th June.

No To The Barge, is a local community action group, designed to get answers from public officials and to stop this unwanted barge from being in Portland and the UK as it is undemocratic and that the people do not want it.
