Evil resides at the Racton Ruins
Racton Monument, known locally as Racton Ruin, is a ruined folly beautifully positioned on a hill overlooking Chichester and the Isle of Wight.
But despite its incredible views, the imposing tower has attracted unwanted attention over the years.
Mystery surrounds the history of the sinister-looking tower, which was built in the mid 18th century.
The unique monument was commissioned by Lord Halifax and was intended to provide a visual statement in the landscape.
It is believed that the lower floor was used as a banqueting hall, while the upper floors provided the Lord with spectacular views.
The building was ordered to be demolished by the owner sometime after 1782. However the work was only partially carried out and the tower remains in a sorry state.
The site of the ruin is believed to be one of the most haunted places in West Sussex.
Freakish sightings include flying bricks, the ghostly figure of a woman, a disembodied face at a window, and perhaps the most terrifying - a phantom tractor.
One of the most solid pieces of history is a 4,000 year old skeleton, known as the Racton Man, which was discovered nearby in 1989.
The skeleton, which is on display at The Novium Museum in Chichester, is believed to be that of a warrior chief who was killed in battle.
Incredibly, he was buried lying with his hands clasping a dagger in front of his face.
The dagger is the oldest bronze object ever found in Britain and one of the oldest in Europe
Sadly, over the years the derelict tower has served as a popular spot for raves and fly tipping.
Owner Mark Talbot said the illegal activity has caused "considerable distress" to local residents.
Mr Talbot said renovation work is needed if the building is to remain as a feature on The South Downs “where it is one of the most notable landmarks on the Sussex coast.”
He submitted plans last year to convert the Grade II Listed tower into a private house, however the application was refused in August 2020.
If you would like to visit the landmark, the Racton Monument circular walk takes you right past it, affording views over the South Downs,
The walk will also take you past Stansted House, a stately home with walled gardens and a tearoom.
