There is no escaping Hell (The rich man and Lazarus Luke 16:19-31)
Harry Houdini made a career out of escaping impossible life-threatening situations and was without a doubt the most famous escape artist every to live. He would submerge himself under water bound in chains, padlocks, and a strait jacket only to emerge dramatically unscathed to the cheers of an awestruck crowd. Houdini prided himself on being able to escape any situation and even boasted that he could escape anything, even death. This man died almost one hundred years ago, and his name is still famous as most know exactly who you are speaking of when you hear his name. The rich man from Jesus’s story of the rich man and Lazarus opened his eyes in eternity and immediately felt the hopelessness of knowing that he was never going to be able to escape. Verse 26 says that there is a great gulf fixed that no one could cross over and certainly he could never pass over. After Abraham revealed this to the rich man his immediate thought went to warning the family that he loved so that they would never taste the eternal pain and suffering that he now found himself in.
Houdini is still in the grave and the only hope he had of escaping the grave did not come from his skills or ability to pick a lock. The only hope any of us have of escaping death, hell, and grave is if Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. Once you open your eyes in Hell, you will quickly realize what the rich man from Jesus’s story discovered, there is no hope of escaping. I know this is not a positive or uplifting blog, but we want you to know the reality of your eternal future is if you leave this earth not knowing Jesus Christ. I am sure the rich man lived his life without a care in the world knowing that no matter what came along he would be able to deal with it, then reality smacked him in the face hard. This life is temporary, and we are all spirit beings that are created to live eternally. The way we interact with the creator of the heavens and the earth determines whether we spend eternity in the presence of God or eternity separated from God in Hell. The choice is ours; we cannot get too wrapped in the present life that we forget that we are really living for eternity. Examine your heart today and make sure you are living a life that has an eternal perspective in mind and not just living for the moment.
