Metro Mayor Jamie Driscoll quits Labour and thank goodness he has.

Metro Mayor Jamie Driscoll has quit Labour to stand again and if his crowdfunder is anything to go by, Starmer is getting beat.
Right so, I covered a wee while ago the fallout that had ensued over the fact North of Tyne Metro Mayor for Labour Jamie Driscoll had been barred from standing to effectively stand again for his as his patch becomes the North East metro mayor region. Despite being the incumbent mayor, despite have a record of accomplishments not least in reducing child poverty, something Sir Kid Starver clearly isn’t interested in, Driscoll was barred from standing again, failing to even be longlisted, though this was mainly due to the fact he was the last remaining Corbyn supporter still in a position of power. The shortlist was predictable too, with Starmerite Kim McGuinness effectively expecting to be anointed to the role on behalf of Labour now. It was branded as sectarian and staggering by Labour left figures and frankly that’s an understatement. Driscoll has used the Labour Party mechanisms to appeal as best he could, but appeal is pointless when the party is basically a dictatorship now and lefties like him aren’t welcome. The official reason was because Driscoll appeared at a theatrical event with film director Ken Loach, expelled from the party for daring to attend a group Starmer later had proscribed. Well if people can be punished by association via the ability to time travel, Starmer should have expelled himself for going on Question Time with Loach back in 2016. But at last having exhausted every avenue available to him, Jamie Driscoll has reached a decision and that is that this is not a Labour Party he can be a part of any longer. Like so many of us who have left in disgust, mayor Jamie has now joined us. He wrote to Keith the Kid Starver saying: ‘Given you have barred me from running as North East Mayor, despite being incumbent Mayor, I have no other choice. In 2020 you told me to my face that you would ‘inspire people to come together, disciplining people to be united is going nowhere.’ You’ve broken that promise. You’ve U-turned on so many promises: £28 billion to tackle the climate emergency, free school meals, ending university tuition fees, reversing NHS privatisation; in fact, a list of broken promises too long to repeat in this letter. And please stop saying ‘I make no apologies for…’ before you find yourself saying ‘I make no apologies for making no apologies. Britain is a mess. Wages have fallen behind inflation. People are struggling to pay mortgages. Knife crime is out of control. Business investment has flat lined. The climate response is barely existent.
