Best Advice for Enhancing Interpersonal Relationships

"You make yourself and others suffer just as much when you take offense as when you give offense." ~Key Keye's Jr.

Buddhists believe we are living in Maya, the illusion of separateness. In this state we believe we are separate from everyone, and everything else. This causes us to judge, attack, criticize, and compete with others. It is at the heart of all interpersonal and global conflict.

Our practice is to simply realize that there is nothing outside of ourselves that can cause us to take offense at anything anyone says or does to us. This does not mean you have to take it. By all means, protect yourself, and keep yourself safe. It simply means that you can choose to view the words or actions of others from a place of detachment. The magic of doing so is that you are able to form a more intelligent response to their actions because you have not allowed your emotions to take over and shut down your higher cognitive processes. So it's in your best interest to not take personally anything that someone says or does to you.
