Find Hogfish and Grouper Spearfishing Key Largo

The key to finding hogfish and grouper off key largo is to find big coral heads. In this video Beata and I run out to the Atlantic ocean through Tavernier Creek Bridge. Once we are roughly 3-4 miles out we start looking for coral heads.

You can find some great coral heads in only 10-15 feet of water so it's a great time for beginners and more advanced divers. It's hard to miss the coral heads. I usually run around 26-30 knots when looking for them. As soon as I find some good looking heads I will anchor 50 yards upcurrent from them and put out my chum bags.

The chum slick will drift right over the coral heads and create a spectacular display of life. Hogfish, grouper, snapper, sharks, turtles and all sorts of marine life will come.

I spotted many black grouper, the biggest being in the beginning of the video. He was lucky and got away, but the hogfish weren't so lucky. Beata had great aim today and got a couple fish for the boat.

If you use plenty of chum you have an extremely high chance of finding the hogfish and grouper. Just make sure when spearfishing you wait at least 15 minutes before jumping into the water once your chum slick is going. I find that waiting brings the fish in a lot closer to the boat.

We didn't get as many fish as I was hoping for but it was a great spot and i'll be returning here later this week after the weather calms down a bit.

Hope you learned something and enjoyed the video! I'll be posting more this weekend!
