"Love Potion No. 9," written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, was first recorded by The Clovers, from Washington DC, in 1959; their version rose to the no. 23 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Then, the Liverpool England group The Searchers recorded the song and had a major hit with their take, which hit the no. 3 position on the Billboard chart the winter of 1964 into 1965 (Whitburn, 2013). The Coasters also had a minor hit with their version of the song that stalled at no. 76 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1971 (Whitburn, 2013).
