FaroeIslands - 14th June 2023, there were 2 horrific grindadrap hunts on the Faroe Islands with:
269 long finned pilot whales killed at Vestmanna
178 long finned pilot whales killed at Leynar.
These were the 4th and 5th grindadrap hunts already in 2023 with the 3 previous hunts being:
12 pilot whales at Kollafjordur on 8th May
48 pilot whales at Klaksvik on 15th May
63 pilot whales at Midvagur on 6th June
Our crew have been on the islands since 1st May documenting all these hunts. The statistics are already shocking with 570 long finned pilot whales (actually a dolphin species) killed already - and without even a quota/limit for pilot whales, this year stands to get much worse!
The grindadrap hunts are unique the Faroe Islands - but in Iceland Kristjan Loftsson's company Hvalur hf has a whaling station and two harpoon ships which have a quota of 209 fin whales (the second largest whale after the blue whale) this summer.
We have crew based in Iceland as well monitoring the commercial whaling there which typically generates 3500+ tons of whale meat which is almost entirely sent to Japan
In Iceland, virtually all the restaurants that do sell whale meat to tourists (which is not a traditional Icelandic dish at all) - actually sell Norwegian harpooned Minke whale.
As if that could not get any worse - 90% of the Norwegian minke whales killed are female, and virtually all of those are pregnant when harpooned.
WHALING MUST END! Please be a voice for the dolphins, Thank you
