The Garmin fenix 5 Plus is an upgrade from the Forerunner 235, which I absolutely loved.
The 235 was a fantastic watch for tracking my runs and workouts, but I was easily convinced to switch to the fenix 5x Plus because of its impressive features like maps and music.
In just my first week of using the fenix 5 Plus, Ive already put it through its paces with 4 runs ranging from 7-10 miles, as well as sprint workouts and even yoga sessions.
Ive also tested out the maps by plotting points around town. Firstly, the GPS function of the fenix 5 Plus hasnt shown much difference compared to the 235.
The GPS does seem to lock on slightly faster, but thats about it. One of the standout features for me is the maps.
Although Im currently in Africa and have rudimentary maps on my device, Im looking forward to returning to the states soon to be able to test out the North American maps.
In the meantime, having even basic maps on the device gives me peace of mind as an emergency tool. Ive also had the chance to try out the music feature while running outdoors.
When Im in the gym, I still use my phone for music and the treadmill. I did notice a slight drop in connectivity with my Jaybird earbuds initially, but it quickly resolved itself within a minute or two.
Another small inconvenience I noticed is that my Spotify playlist doesnt stay on the device if I switch over to my iTunes music. However, this is not a deal breaker for me and could potentially be addressed in future software updates.
Battery life has been impressive so far. After 7 days of use, the battery is still at just under 40%. This is definitely good enough for my needs, and Im eager to see how much longer it will last before needing a recharge.
If it can last 12-14 days, I would be more than content, considering how I typically use the watch. Of course, at some point, I will have to take it off to charge it.
Overall, the Garmin fenix 5 Plus is a fantastic upgrade from the Forerunner 235. The addition of maps and music have greatly enhanced my experience with the watch.
The GPS function is reliable, and even though the maps are basic for now, they still provide some useful information. The music feature works well, despite a few minor connectivity issues.
Most importantly, the battery life has been impressive, and I cant wait to continue testing its limits.
