Zuma in Russia seeking medical treatment, meanwhile, he is due back in jail at home

Mzwanele Manyi, the spokesperson for the Jacob Zuma Foundation, confirmed on Friday that Zuma was in Russia for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, back at home, the Constitutional court has ruled that the former president is due back in jail to serve the rest of his 15 month term.
This after, the then Commissioner of Correctional Services, Arthur Fraser granted him medical parole and freed him in September 2021, just three months into his 15-month sentence.
The release sparked legal challenges by the DA, Helen Suzman Foundation, and Afriforum. They took the matter to court and were successful in their challenge.
Former President Jacob Zuma's legal troubles and his subsequent imprisonment in July 2021 can be traced back to his defiance of a directive from the Constitutional Court to appear before the Zondo Commission.
The commission was investigating allegations of state capture by the Gupta brothers during his presidency.
They subsequently requested the court's intervention after Zuma staged a walkout in November 2020.
In February 2021, the Constitutional Court ordered Zuma to appear before the commission and answer all questions between 15 and 19 February.
However, he refused to comply, leading the commission to request his imprisonment.
In June 2021, after hearing arguments from the commission, the Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in prison and instructed the police to ensure his arrest.
In spite of various efforts by Zuma’s legal team to overturn the court’s decision, the court withheld its ruling while the deadline for Zuma to surrender or face arrest approached.
On 7 July 2021, Zuma decided to take control of the situation and avoid being arrested publicly by surrendering himself and began serving his sentence at the Estcourt Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal on 8 July 2021.
This triggered one of South Africa’s most severe episodes of socio-political unrest in recent history.
The country experienced violent protests, rampant looting and widespread destruction of private and public properties, primarily in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng,
On 13 July 2023, The Constitutional Court dismissed an application by the Department of Correctional Services.
In the application, it wanted to appeal the ruling that effectively sent former president Jacob Zuma back to prison to finish his sentence.
