The Sage Fly Fishing - FOUNDATION Fly Rod is a fast action fly rod that is much stiffer than other rods I have owned or used in the past. This is a great feature, especially for those who prefer a faster and more powerful action when casting.
One minor issue I have with this rod is that it does not come with a hook loop near the cork handle for attaching a fly when moving between fishing pools.
While this is a small gripe, it would have been a convenient addition to the rod. I am particularly excited to use this rod for fishing with large flies for bass, carp, and pike.
The stiffer action of the rod will provide the necessary backbone to handle these larger flies and the powerful fish that go after them. I had the opportunity to use this rod last week in Patagonia Argentina and it performed exceptionally well.
Considering the price I paid for it, the performance of this rod is truly outstanding. Speaking of price, I was able to purchase this rod on sale for $350 instead of the original price of $425.
This is a great deal for a high-quality fly rod. As someone who owns 13 fly rods from various brands such as Fenwick, Redington, Orvis, TFO, Syndicate, Echo, and more, I can confidently say that this rod is a keeper.
The 6wt size I bought is perfect for my needs and offers great versatility in different fishing situations. While there were a couple of negatives about this rod, such as the lack of a sock and alignment dots, these are minor issues that can be easily fixed.
It is worth noting that many Redington rods also lack a sock, so this is not uncommon. Additionally, the cork handle is above average in quality and the rod itself looks solid and well-built.
One thing to consider is that the warranty for this rod is not as solid as others on the market, but given its durability and performance, it is unlikely that you will need to rely on the warranty.
This rod is truly a fish catcher and is a steal at $350.
If you are willing to spend a bit more, you might want to consider looking into the G Loomis rods, but at the price of $350, it is hard to beat the value and performance of the Sage Fly Fishing - FOUNDATION Fly Rod.
I purchased this rod as a replacement for my stolen Sage Approach rod, which was also an entry-level rod from Sage. After the Approach was discontinued, I was pleased to find that the FOUNDATION rod offered a worthy replacement.
The quality and performance of this rod exceeded my expectations and I am confident that it will serve me well for years to come.
