Giraffes have evolved to possess long necks that have been made possible by their unique skeletal structure. Rather than having more vertebrae in their neck, like some might assume, giraffes actually have the same number of neck vertebrae as most mammals. What sets them apart is that each individual vertebra is elongated, giving their necks the extraordinary length we associate with these majestic animals.
