European heatwave: How locals and tourists are fighting the dangerously high summer temperatures
Several European countries were impacted by a fierce heatwave on Thursday, triggering warnings that temperatures may be the highest the continent has ever seen this week.
The heat was so immense, in fact, that some locals and tourists in Croatia found themselves bathing in mud to cool down.
In Athens, Greece, ambulances surrounded the perimeter of the Acropolis to ensure the safety of those visiting. Red Cross workers were also equipped with medical supplies and water bottles ready on hand.
Alerts are currently in place across Spain, Italy, Cyprus and Greece, with the Greek authorities expecting temperatures to reach as high as 43 or 44 Celsius on Friday.
The impact of extreme heat in the summer has been brought into the spotlight by research that revealed at least 61,000 people may have died as a result of Europe's sweltering heatwaves last summer.
