• Neh. 9:36 The Israelites were in the strange position of being slaves in their own land, having to turn over a part of their resources each year to a foreign king. How ironic, since God had given the land to them. This was certainly a bitter reminder of the lasting consequences of sin. Sins enslaves, sin is a sinker and a destroyer. May you not be found in it in Jesus' name.

• Neh. 9:37 Servants is used as a term of irony here. The people of Israel had been called to be the servants of God (Lev_25:55), but here they were servants of foreign rulers. The produce of the land did not belong to them; it went to kings. The people were taxed by Persians for the produce of the land that was God’s gift to them. Under the curse of the law, anyone who refuses to serve God would serve his enemies, but the scripture say in Luk 1:74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear. This shall be your portion in Jesus' name!

• Neh. 9:38 The children of Israel covenanted to make an agreement (cf. 2Ki_23:3), which they wrote down and sealed. This suited the dispensation in which they lived. But such an agreement cannot be kept by a human being. By doing so they (unconsciously) indicated that they were better than their fathers. The general lesson is that after confessing our guilt, we will continue our walk on the basis of grace that we received when we were converted.
