While the Ukraine-Russia war, which has killed thousands of people, is still raging, Czech President Petr Pavel has made some eye-opening statements about China. Pavel warned that China should not be trusted to mediate between Russia and Ukraine as it is in Beijing's interest to continue the war.
He said this as China tries to portray itself as a mediator in Ukraine. France, among other countries, believes China might play a role in peace talks, while most Western allies are skeptical of this move. Nonetheless, Pavel, a former commander and top NATO official, noted that when it comes to Ukraine, "China only wants what's best for itself- and, for the time being, that's more war." "I believe that it is in China’s interest to prolong the status quo," Pavel said, "because it can push Russia to a number of concessions." According to him, in exchange for its "no limits" collaboration with the Kremlin, Beijing may obtain cheap oil, gas, and other resources from Moscow. "It's also good for China that the West is probably becoming a little bit weaker by supporting Ukraine," he said.
"I don't think China has a real interest in resolving the war in a short time," the Czech leader stated.
