The ABU GARCIA Ambassadeur Classic C3 fishing reel has been a reliable companion for me for several years now. Initially, I was a bit disappointed as I had expected it to have a clicker on the left side, allowing me to hear when a fish bites.
However, the picture I saw when I ordered it seemed to indicate that it had this feature. At the time of purchase, I found the price of the 5500 model to be a steal at only $79.95.
However, I have noticed that prices have significantly increased since then. Despite the price hike, I still believe that this reel is exceptional for catching strippers and catfish.
When purchasing this reel, it is essential to ensure that you get the C3 model. I have come across a plastic version called the Ambassadeur 6500, which I believe is nothing more than a piece of junk.
To date, I have collected around 10 C3 reels in various models, and I have found them to be truly great. These reels have proven their worth by allowing me to catch a wide range of fish, including trout, kokanee, salmon, stripers, and even sturgeon.
Although I must note that the reel size may be too small for sturgeon fishing, unless you are in a boat. One of the standout features of the ABU GARCIA Ambassadeur C3 reels is their excellent drags.
These drags, in my opinion, make them the perfect choice for kokanee and trout fishing, especially the 4600 model. However, when it comes to salmon fishing, I have found myself leaning more towards line counters as I feel they provide better results.
Nonetheless, the C3 reels still perform admirably when tackling salmon. Overall, I must say that these reels are fantastic. However, I have noticed that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a good deal on them.
With a price tag of $120, I believe there may be better reels available in this price range. In terms of my personal fishing preferences, I typically spend around 45-60 days a year fishing for steelhead.
If there happens to be a salmon season, I will fish an additional 15-20 days. In my area of Northeast Oregon, the average size for steelhead is approximately 6 pounds, considering the distance from the ocean.
In conclusion, the ABU GARCIA Ambassadeur Classic C3 fishing reel has proven to be a reliable and versatile reel for a variety of fishing needs. While it may have its limitations, it remains a top choice for strippers and catfish.
Additionally, its exceptional drags make it ideal for trout and kokanee fishing. Although the price has increased over the years, it is still a great reel, although there may be better options available in its price range.
Overall, I highly recommend it for anyone in need of a dependable fishing reel.
