The Morakniv Garberg Survival (S) Stainless Steel is a knife that initially left me feeling underwhelmed due to its lack of sharpness out of the box. Many people had raved about its grind, but I personally found the micro bevel to be lacking.
However, I am planning on regrinding the knife to remove the secondary bevel, and I believe that I will enjoy it far more once I do so. Upon unpackaging the knife, I was pleasantly surprised by its light weight yet solid feel.
It feels sturdy enough that I wouldnt hesitate to use it for batoning, yet it remains unobtrusive on my side until it accidentally bumps into something.
One aspect of this knife that I really appreciate is the back of the blade and the exposed portion of the full tang at the pommel.
These parts of the knife throw nice sparks with a ferro rod, and they also have a sharp enough edge to scrape together some great tinder. In terms of the handle, the over molded scales feel very solid and secure in the hand.
Additionally, each piece of this knife feels as if it clicks securely in place, both when inserting the knife into the sheath and when attaching individual accessories onto the sheath itself.
One accessory that caught my attention is the small diamond sharpener, which I was initially interested in for its effectiveness. However, I was disappointed to find a lack of reviews or detailed opinions on it.
One minor issue I encountered while sharpening the knife is that it can be difficult to hold an angle, especially with the secondary bevel. This is due to the narrow area you have to work with, which can make achieving the desired angle a bit challenging.
In conclusion, while I initially had some reservations about the Morakniv Garberg Survival (S) Stainless Steel, I still believe it has many great qualities.
It feels light yet solid, throws sparks with ease, and has a secure handle. Though the sharpness out of the box left something to be desired, I am confident that I can improve it through regrinding.
