Genesis and Gilgamesh: The Original Meaning of Genesis

The interpretation of Genesis which we have received is that of a fall from paradise, in which Adam and Eve enjoyed immortality, into a world of death.

This mortality also came with the punishments of agricultural and reproductive labor. We know that the authors of the New Testament took this interpretation, so it was likely the popular interpretation by that time.

However, when we look at the original text and strip away the layers of alter interpretation, the text does not seem to support the idea that Adam and Eve were immortal in Eden.
