The 1877 Wimbledon Championship marked the world's first official lawn tennis tournament, later recognized as the first Grand Slam. It was organized by the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club to raise funds for lawn maintenance. Spencer Gore became the inaugural Wimbledon champion by defeating William Marshall in the Gentlemen's Singles final.

The tournament featured 22 participants who paid one guinea each to compete. The event, delayed by rain, concluded on 19 July 1877 in front of a small audience.The winner received a silver challenge cup and 12 guineas in prize money. The tournament made a profit of £10 and led to rule modifications based on court dimensions.

In modern times, the Wimbledon Championship and its historical significance mark a pivotal moment in the evolution of tennis, boosting the sport towards becoming one of the most widely played and watched activities in the world.
