Migration: 686 migrants arrive in small boats in a single day

686 migrants crossed the English Channel in small boats on the first Monday in July, according to figures released by the government.

The highest number to arrive in a single day this year came as protest groups continue to oppose plans to house up to 500 asylum seekers in a barge off the Dorset coast.
