The Pictorial Perspective

My dad said this was the most challenging painting of his career. He painted it three times before it became what you see here today. The story content here is hidden from view. It does not immediately jump at the viewer, just like temptation itself. The devil never shows up wearing a red suit with horns and a pitchfork, instead he shows up packaged so beautifully that we love the appearance of it.

The individual temptations the devil brought to Jesus are the same ones that Adam and Eve faced and they are the same ones you and I face every day. They never change. First of all, they are presented to us in our mind, that is the battleground, although they can be felt quite clearly in our sensual realm. The senses are very much involved. There are however only 3 ways he is allowed to entice us into sin:

The lust of the eyes
The lust of the flesh
The pride of life

1 John 2:15-17
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Sounds simple, right?

Adam and Eve may disagree.

So how does an artist convey thoughts in the mind, and at the same time portray in a format of great appeal to the senses? The great attention getting appeal of a sunset is always stimulating to our physical senses. Sin likewise, is always packaged beautifully, for maximum consumer appeal. The sunset is the termination of the day and Jesus was tempted for 40 days but we only see the very end of His tempting and it is described for us in Matthew 4 and Luke 4. And remember the number 4 is a Door. Temptation is also a Door.

The lust of the flesh is portrayed in the painting by the 4 smooth round stones at His feet that He was tempted to make into loaves of bread.

Luke 4:1-3:
1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit [a]into the wilderness, 2 being [b]tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
He is tempted, just as Adam and Eve with food first. It may be because if you cannot resist the urge of food, then how can you resist the urge of other things? This may have something to do with the fact that this is an attack against the Temple of the Holy Spirit which is not our own and it belongs to God.
So with the food He is tempted to trade in stones which represent the eternal for the food which represents the temporary.

The pride of life is portrayed in the painting by the rock formation that Jesus is sitting on. It is representative of the three-step pinnacle around the top of the Holy of Holies in the temple.

Luke 4:9-11:
9 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you,’
11 and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

He would have been seen by all if He had been up on the Pinnacle of the Temple and He would have had the opportunity to reveal to them who He truly was before it was His time. He kept saying “Woman, it is not yet my time.” Tell no one that I did these things.
We like to say “Look what I did and get credit for everything we do.’

The lust of the eyes is portrayed in the painting by the architectural facades in the clouds in the background of the sunset. Each one represents a a type of counterfeit kingdom, representing man’s estrangement with the “Kingdom of God”.
Luke 4:5-6:
5 [a]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

The Kingdoms:
SLIDE 9 On the far right you have the Oriental Pagoda representing the philosophy of man, man’s own knowledge and wisdom. In the Greek the word philo means LOVE and the word sophia means KNOWLEDGE. So the love of knowledge. But knowledge without the wisdom and understanding to use that knowledge can be dangerous.
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
We can see from this scripture that the situational ethics of today’s modern world are really nothing new.
SLIDE 10 The second kingdom in the clouds here moving from right to left is the Mosque from Mecca. This represents a theocratic kingdom religion(one god religion) of prayer and devotional living, it does not provide any assurance of salvation or a savior to accomplish it.
SLIDE 11 The third group of buildings are of the Turkish Ottoman Empire. This was a kingdom built on sheer human willpower and force with no respect for human individuality and was consequently the bloodiest kingdom the world has ever known.
SLIDE 12 The fourth group of buildings is the Tower of London and Big Ben of the British Empire. This represents a theocracy, with a savior, but the king holds and wields the power as his own, and not truly, as God's representative in the earth.
SLIDE 13The fifth building is the Rotunda in Washington, D.C. and this represents man's effort to govern himself, to call his own shots, and determine his own destiny. as he sees it. It started out with great intentions and a foundation based on the biblical, Judeo-Christian principles, but soon sank into the morass of self-determination and the situational ethics of "modern thinking.
SLIDE 14 The sixth conglomeration of buildings is the skyline of Wall Street on Manhattan Island, New York. This is the ultimate kingdom of man's contrivance; it is the "kingdom of the Almighty Dollar". It operates not on the principles of the pages from the Bible, God's words; but it operates on the principles of pages from the ledger, man's numbers of profitability versus valuelessness.
If we are not busy building the kingdom of God, then we are typically busy building our own kingdom. We are busy building, our wealth, our heritage, Our legacy, our inheritance to pass on, our business.
SLIDE 15 The temptation that Jesus was offered here is to take the short cut to being the king of kings. Each one of these kingdoms has a king, and he offered to make him king over all of the kings. This is a position that he, of course, with later, obtain by inheritance at the resurrection.
We get offered shortcuts all the time to the place where we feel we should ultimately end up at. Ex - I should already be wealthy, therefore people lie, cheat or steal in business. Maybe the partner in a company thinks they should be ahead of where they are so they stop paying their business partner what is due to them.

So what is Temptation?
A thought… A thought that begs you to yield what you say and what you do to it’s demands. The devil’s bait to try to get you walking in the perfect will of the devil.
Where did Temptation start? Garden of Eden, it ended in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Who brings Temptation? Satan, but through people and evil spirits.
What format does Temptation come in?
Ephesians 6:16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
Temptation comes as fiery darts of the wicked one.
Thoughts.
The mind is the center of the teeter totter between your Spirit man and your Flesh. The mind decides which side to slant the weight towards.
EX - When you were a kid did you ever play teeter totter and have a kid who was balancing on the axis in the middle and then they all of a sudden jump to one side and you go flying up in the air?
SEEDS - Those thoughts come in seed format.
They look harmless as seeds because they are small.
All thoughts have either Life or Death attached to them. And whatever is attached will start as a seed and then grow. When it gets to full maturity it will start to produce fruit. Multiplying. That fruit will plant more seeds and those seeds will carry a new generation in them. They will then turn into seeds of death, both spiritual and physical.
EXAMPLE - The thought(fiery dart) - “She’s pretty”.
Seed format - Seems harmless.
Then you meditate on that thought (the water on the seed). It grows to “I’ll just start a conversation with her.”
The seed grows - She reciprocates your kindness. The relationship grows because she had a seed from her childhood that says “You aren’t worthy of love from a man” because of how her dad treated her.
And grows - You have sex with her but I promised myself it would just be one time.
Here comes the multiplication - It turns into many times. Your teenage daughter walks in on the affair. Your faithful wife finds out. She leaves you. Your net worth is cut in half.
The new generation - Your daughter decides that all men are pigs. She cuts off all communication with you ending your relationship permanently. She goes from one destructive relationship with men who treat her bad to another.
Death - your daughter, as unhappy as she is, turns to drugs because of the empty feelings of no one to love her the right way and eventually takes her own life.
What is the devil’s purpose for using Temptation?
To accomplish the perfect will of the devil.
How did Adam and Eve handle Temptation?
They walked in the perfect will of the devil. That was not what the seed looked like, but it is what the fruit looked like.
How did Jesus handle Temptation?
He walked in the perfect will of God.
Who deals with Temptation?
Jesus did. So you will. Your kids will.
When will we be done with Temptation?
Not in this lifetime.
How do we defeat Temptation?
Ephesians 6:16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
What will your shield always be made of?
Faith - a simple definition of the word faith is “what we believe”.
What are the materials that make up what we believe?
Experiences we had, both good and bad. EX - my mom died from breast cancer therefore I will die from breast cancer if I get it.
Advice from others. Mom and Dad, friends, someone we saw on TV, a celebrity, a politician or leader(spiritual or non). EX - Mom always told me you can’t get pregnant the 1st time.
Something we read in a book.
The thoughts the enemy brings to you. EX - you will never amount to anything good in your life. Joe Lamb.
The word of God.
What strengthens a belief?
Your shield is like a foundation. The wider it gets, the stronger it gets. I put more piers into the ground the foundation gets stronger. If I have a chair with one leg, two legs, three, four. What is strongest? Same goes for a belief - if I have one verse of scripture on a subject, two scriptures, ten?
Faith is “whatever I hear and then accept as truth.” I don’t have to hear it a hundred times to accept something as truth. Just look at gossip that gets shared, people accept that stuff as truth the moment they hear it and then form a belief.
The shield can stop a thought before it ever enters in.
EX - my wife is an axe murderer.
You will never convince me of this no matter what. I know from experience and character that she would never do that. She hates the sight of blood, she hates violence, she would rather nurture people.
EX - God is not going to come through with your healing.

Hebrews 4:14-16
“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
“Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”

Jesus was tempted to sin in all the ways you are.

Is it a sin to be tempted? The church pretends that they are never tempted. Jesus was tempted in all the ways we are, so that means he was tempted in fornication, in drunkenness, and violence.

Did it make him any less?
If you like to walk around bragging that you’ve never been tempted, then all that means is that you have never passed any tests.

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭7‬-‭9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
“who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,”

How should we handle other people who fall to temptation? We are supposed to forgive 7 times 70 times. Love covers a multitude of sin. Judge not, lest we be judged. Why are you concerned with the speck in your brother’s eye when there is a plank in your own?

Pastors get up in the pulpit, and tell people there is no pleasure in sin, but the Bible says that there is the pleasure of sin for a season.

It wouldn’t be temptation if there wasn’t a part of you that wanted to sin. That’s why it’s called passing the test.

When Jesus goes through the temptation, angels come to minister to him. When we go through temptation, we can ask God for angels to help us. What do you think happens when temptation comes to us, the devil sends his angels, which are demons to try and influence us for the bad, so on the flipside of that angels are there to minister to us.

Luke 22:39-46:
39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done(yielding). 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation

This passage depicts the garden of Gethsemane where you see Jesus being tempted again. This is to show you that there are varying degrees of being tempted, and there are more than one test of being tempted. Temptation will never cease in your lifetime. Just because you pass one test does not mean there are no other tests. The devil is definitely persistent. If he was persistent with Jesus, he will be persistent with you.

Temptation deals with the battle of the will, for the will of man. In the battle for the will of Adam, that man lost. For the battle of the will of Jesus that man won. The question now becomes what will happen in the battle for the will of you and me. Will you walk out the perfect will of God or will you walk out the perfect will of the devil? Will you build the kingdom of God on earth or will you build the kingdom of the enemy on earth? Will you continue to make your shield of faith out of God’s word or will you make your shield of what you believe out of untruth and deceptions of the enemy and your experiences and your mom‘s opinion?

We see people who resist the temptation for a day or for a month, but the devil is persistent, and he will continue to come back six months from now in a year from now, and 6000 years from now. How long will you go without succumbing to the Temptations.

You can see different levels of temptation in different areas where it stresses things. In the garden of Gethsemane, you can see where Jesus was physically sweating blood, and on the cross, you can see where he was physically taking the ultimate damage for not succumbing to the will of the enemy. But what you cannot see, is what was happening to Jesus in the spirit because he had never sinned, and he had never been separated from the father God, but then he cries out my god my god why have you forsaken me, and we know that the sin of the whole world came down on top of him that day, and that he went to hell and paid the price for our sins.

Why did Jesus ask three of the disciples to come closer with him in the garden of Gethsemane? Can you see that he would’ve liked some support when he was going through a difficult time of temptation?

What does that tell us about what we should do when we are being tempted?

Should we tell people that were never tempted to fall into adultery and that were never tempted to fall into alcoholism and that were never tempted in anything? And why did he pick these three? Do you think it’s possible that some people are going to hold you to a higher standard than others? Who are you hanging out with when you feel temptation?

The way you keep from sinning when you are tempted is by using the eyes of faith to see what is sitting out in front of you. That has not come to pass yet. This is how Jesus overcame Temptation. This is how you will overcome temptation. Think about what he was seeing by faith was him seated at the right hand of the father. He was seeing the glory of heaven. He was seeing all of the Saints that would come to. Faith threw his obedience.

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Do you ever just think to yourself, I really want to read the Satanic Bible and meditate on satan’s words so I can accomplish his perfect will in my life… ? I’m going to go through my daily confessions of satan’s word over my life… Then I’m going to act as though I believe his word fully.

No, this should sound crazy to you that I even suggested it. But are there areas of your life where you are meditating on the enemies words and speaking his words because you are fully convinced that what he said is true. In fact you are so sure his word is Truth that you are not only saying, you are walking it out in actions as though it is.

The Parable of the Sower
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. 10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. 19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. 20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. 22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
The Temptation is the reverse of the Parable of the Sower. You hear the Word of God and if you are good ground then you will receive some 30, some 60 and some 100 fold return on the Word that you act on. If you always were good ground you would live out the perfect will of God for your life.

You can also hear the Word of the devil and if you are good ground you will receive some 30, some 60 and some 100 fold return on the Word that you act on. If you always were good ground you would live out the perfect will of satan for your life.

Guilt versus Pride
For most people, the problem with sin is that it causes guilt. The devils plan is to help you to not have guilt by celebrating your sin. This is why there is a thing called pride month. If you say that sin is a good thing and needs to be celebrated then it takes away the guilt And allows you to seer your conscience so that you continuously sin, and even celebrate your sin. Sin has to be acknowledged as sin. Imagine if we had a month that was called Overpopulation Control Month and we talked about how great it is for everyone to be a murderer. Murdering is a great thing and we should do it all the time. We should teach our children to murder. We should do a children’s murder hour at schools where we teach them all the best ways to murder people.

When a person sins, and they have a conscience that is still listening to God, they begin to feel conviction about what they have done. That conviction should turn to repentance and turn their heart to seek God for forgiveness. The devil will try to turn your sin into shame which makes you shrink away from God and away from other believers. This is also why he tries to get other believers to be in unforgiveness when you sin. If he can’t get you into shame then he is trying to make sin be something that you have pride in instead of shame in.

Building Your Shield of Faith out of the Devil’s Words:
If you begin to reject the word of God and stop listening to the warnings of the voice of God, then you will seer your conscience, and when that happens, it means you have a literally built your shield of faith to keep God’s word out of your heart and stop it from producing fruit in your life. And that is a very dangerous place to be.

Children know how to yield their heart to their parents:
A good example of someone yielding to a person with more wisdom is when a child yields his will to the will of his father or mother. In the same way, we are to yield our will to the father God.

People often miss characterize sin by saying I have a problem or I have a weakness or I made a mistake or I have a difficulty or I’m working on myself. They don’t wanna call it sin. It’s like they are working on their sin to holiness ratio. But Jesus didn’t go to the cross to pay for our problem or our difficulty.

Does anybody know what the greatest killer of all of mankind is in this world? Is it disease? Is it war? No, it is sin. The wages of sin is death.

But so many people don’t even understand the definition of sin. One of the definitions I like most is guilty. When you sin, you are guilty. And what comes after you are guilty, judgment, and punishment. And so many people are not talking about their sin, they are not talking about their guilt. And so they go around, covering up their sin all week and then they come to church with their nice clothes on, and their smile on an ex like, they are not being tempted, and they are not sinning. Who else do you know that tried to cover up their sin? Adam and Eve in the garden. This is why we have a church with no power, this is why we have a church that is accomplishing. Nothing, this is why we have a church that is not advancing the kingdom of God. This is why we have believers who are not walking in victory, this is why we have believers who are not walking in the authority of the believer.

Faith - the words that you hear, accept as truth, and give authority to in your life.

The Bible says that we should not judge others, but that we should judge ourselves. It’s so easy to see sin in the other people, and yet so hard to see sin in ourselves. But God calls us to forgive others.

If you’ve read General Flynn‘s book called fifth generation warfare, then you know that he says the battle we are fighting right now in our nation in our world is a battle of narratives. There is a group of people which is Hollywood and main stream, media, and universities in schools That are selling lies as truth. This is no different than the battle that’s been going on from the beginning of time as it started in the Garden of Eden with Adam and eve. It is a battle of the narratives of the enemy of our soul who is selling, lies as truth, because he is the deceiver and the father of lies. Every one of his lies he tries to dress up as truth, because he knows that if he can get those fiery darts to go through the shield of what you believe, then he has got you in a place where you will die early and you will accomplish his perfect will for your life. But all glory to God, there is a truth in his word that sets us free from the laws of sin and death. It is the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, and it has set me free from the law of sin and death. This is why seeing is so important. In the book of Romans, it talks about the fact that where there is no law, there is no sin, but when the law came sin spring to life and I died.

Sin is the result of believing a lie as truth. Examples - Adam, and Eve in the garden. Ananias and Saphira, Judas, Saul of Tarsus.
