Risk of Suicide on the Rise in Gen Z

A troubling pattern is on the rise in Gen Z across the country: increasing risks of suicide, all against a backdrop of teens reporting high levels of hopelessness, sadness, loneliness, and suicidal ideation.

While all teens reported increasing mental health challenges, experiences of violence, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors, girls fared worse than boys across nearly all measures. The new report also confirms ongoing and extreme distress among teens who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning (LGBQ+).

LGB members differ most from their peers in self-reported anxiety levels. While about half of straight/heterosexual adults aged 18 to 25 (52%) report they experienced anxiety a lot of the day yesterday, 71% of those who identify as LGB or another sexual orientation other than straight/heterosexual say the same.

Overall, LGB adults rate their mental health and emotional wellbeing lower than their straight/heterosexual peers. While 63% of straight/heterosexual adults rate their mental health and emotional wellbeing as excellent or good, just 38% of LGB adults say the same.

More of them want to talk about their mental health concerns with someone they trust. Those that want their parents' consent are even more than those who don’t want their permission. But instead what we see is legislative bans that propose neglect, while others offer physiological alterations in the name of care, while parents ignore their divine mandate over their children.
