A new Mission: Impossible video compiles every scene of Tom Cruise running in the franchise in celebration of the actor's birthday. Loosely inspired by the 1960s TV show, the first Mission: Impossible movie was released in 1996, introducing Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. The actor is now gearing up for the release of the seventh installment, which features his most jaw-dropping stunts and action sequences yet.
While the Mission: Impossible stunts evolve with each new movie, Cruise's running remains a staple of every franchise installment. Now, to celebrate Cruise's 61st birthday, Paramount Pictures has compiled every scene of the actor running as Ethan so far. Check out the video below:
Cruise often runs in movies outside of Mission: Impossible as well, of course, and is widely regarded as the best runner in Hollywood for his posture and propulsive movements.
How Much Longer Can Tom Cruise Do Mission: Impossible Movies?
Mission: Impossible 8 was reported to be the final installment in the franchise last year, with Ethan finally expected getting an explosive sendoff. Recently, however, director Christopher McQuarrie has hinted that Mission: Impossible 8 won't be the end after all and the story could continue in additional sequels. The director doesn't address whether Cruise will return for these potential sequels, but it's hard to imagine the franchise without him at this point.
Speaking about his own penchant for action filmmaking, Cruise addressed last year whether he has any plans to start taking it easy when it comes to stunts. The actor makes it clear that he has no intention of retiring from dangerous filmmaking feats, however, and, when asked if he'll still be doing them when he's in his 80s, says "I'm planning on it." The question seems to be, then, not how much longer Cruise is willing to play Ethan in Mission: Impossible, but how much longer audiences will show up for it.
Now in his early 60s, Cruise's appeal as a movie star does not seem to be waning, with Top Gun: Maverick's impressive box office performance and Mission: Impossible 7's projections suggesting that he's still a big draw for audiences. There will eventually come a point when the Mission: Impossible franchise and Cruise's involvement in it becomes too unbelievable but, for now, Cruise and McQuarrie seem interested in continuing to push the envelope of action cinema. It would seem, then, that Cruise will be running on-screen for many years to come.
