Date – Wednesday, July 5th, 2023 – St. Athanasius the Athonite

Athanasius the Athonite, a monk from Trebizond, Turkey, is considered the founder of the monastic community on Mount Athos. Born in the 10th century, Athanasius studied in Constantinople and became a renowned preacher. He sought a more devout life and joined the monks at Mount Kyminas before moving to Mount Athos in Greece. There, he defended the hermits against the Saracens and established the Great Lavra monastery with the help of Nicephoros Phocas, who later became emperor.

Athanasius faced opposition from the existing hermits on Mount Athos as he tried to bring order and discipline to their lives. After Nicephoros' death, Athanasius was forced to leave Athos and live in Cyprus. However, with the support of Emperor John Tzimisces, he returned and became the abbot of the Great Lavra, introducing a rule for the monks based on the teachings of Theodore Studites and Basil of Caesarea.

Tragically, Athanasius died in an accident when the cupola of his church collapsed. He was glorified as a saint after his death.

The life of Athanasius the Athonite teaches us the power of perseverance and devotion in the face of opposition. Despite facing challenges and resistance, he remained steadfast in his mission to establish a disciplined and devout monastic community on Mount Athos. His commitment to his beliefs and his unwavering dedication to God's calling serve as an inspiration for you and I.
