Nigel Farage, former UKIP leader, has accused the prestigious private bank Coutts of dishonesty amid reports his account was closed for not meeting the necessary financial threshold.

Farage denies this, claiming the bank's decision was influenced by his political views and stated that Coutts had never previously mentioned a minimum financial requirement during his 10 years as a customer.

He also claimed that nine other banks had refused to do business with him on the grounds of him being a Politically Exposed Person (PEP), a status given to individuals who hold high public office, requiring banks to apply extra due diligence to their accounts due to an increased risk of potential financial misuse.

The UK government is currently examining whether banks are unjustly closing accounts due to the political views of their customers, which would impact freedom of speech.

The Treasury is investigating the treatment of PEPs by banks, and legislation has been passed that requires the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to review these practices.

A call for evidence has also been issued to ensure fairness in the current system. The Prime Minister's official spokesman echoed the government's concern, highlighting the importance of freedom of speech within the law. Coutts has yet to comment on the issue.
