In striking down affirmative action schemes at universities and colleges, the Supreme Court has ended a practice that pitted applicants against one another based on group identities rather than individual achievement and potential.

On this Fourth of July I want to share a more personal message than I typically do -- because the court's ruling is personal to me.

Students should be judged as INDIVIDUALS -- not on the basis of a group identity.

And that is what it means to be an American - to stand and be judged on our own merits -- our own accomplishments.
